Residents in these areas should remain alert as several isolated thunderstorms are expected during the evening. The storms may bring heavy rainfall, which may cause flash flooding and river flooding in vulnerable areas. A flood warning remains in effect until early this morning.

Today's 3:28 p.m. CDT severe thunderstorm warning warns of the possibility of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Counties affected by the tornado warning include Columbia, Dane, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Rock and Sauk. Spotters may need to be activated this afternoon and evening to monitor developing conditions.

Tornado warning: What does it mean?

A tornado warning indicates that atmospheric conditions in and around the warning area are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. This could lead to the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.

Residents in the danger area should remain alert, monitor weather reports, and be prepared to take action if a tornado warning is issued or they see signs of a tornado, such as a rotating funnel-shaped cloud, an approaching debris cloud, or a roar similar to that of a freight train.

It is important to have a safety plan and know where to seek shelter, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.

Weather forecast

  • Tonight: Tornado Warning until 10:00 p.m. CDT for Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties. Isolated thunderstorms are expected, with possible heavy rain, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
  • Sunday to Saturday: The probability of thunderstorms increases again during the night from Monday to Tuesday and from Friday to Saturday.

The National Weather Service urges people to stay informed of current weather reports and have a plan in place in the event of severe weather. If you observe dangerous conditions, seek shelter immediately and report severe weather to local authorities.
