Masahiro Sakurai's final video has been shot but will not be released for “a while”.

Almost two years after the release of the first episode, Masahiro Sakurai's YouTube channel Creating Games is coming to an end. Currently, we do not know when the final episode will be released, but Sakurai has announced on X/Twitter that the final episode has been recorded, and the Super Smash Bros Ultimate The director is keeping quiet about the release date. The news isn't a huge surprise, as Sakurai announced in January that the channel would be shutting down this year. But those who enjoyed his videos will certainly be disappointed.

“We have finished recording the final episode of the channel,” Sakurai wrote on Twitter (translated by Google). “I think it will be a while before it is released, so until then please enjoy the regular episodes…”

Since August 2022, Sakurai's channel has offered viewers the opportunity to delve deep into the development process of various games. In a video released a few days ago, Sakurai shared some of the details that went into the Mishima Dojo stage. Super Smash Bros UltimateUnsurprisingly, Super Smash Bros. has captured most of the channel's attention, but it also gave Sakurai the opportunity to reveal never-before-told stories about older games, such as 2003's Kirby Air Ride.

At this time, we don't know exactly why the channel is being shut down, but it's possible that Sakurai is turning his attention to the next game in the Super Smash Bros. series. Nintendo hasn't announced that a new game is in development, but a new console from the company is expected to be announced sometime before the end of March 2025. Every Nintendo console (and 3DS) since 1999 has featured a Super Smash Bros. game. Although Sakurai has described himself as “semi-retired,” there are indications that he's not done with the series yet.

Aside from Super Smash Bros. games selling very well at Nintendo, there are other reasons to believe a new game is in development. In late 2023, Bandai Namco began hiring for a game that sounds suspiciously like the next entry in the franchise. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Sakurai and Smash Bros., but hopefully the director brings his trademark enthusiasm to the project!
