Apple will release watchOS 11 this fall

Apple Watch is getting its annual feature upgrade this fall with a host of updates. Here are our favorite new features in watchOS 11.

Every year, most of the world's attention is focused on iOS, and this year is especially true with the launch of Apple Intelligence. But Apple's wrist-worn computer is also set to have a big year.

Live activities

Live Activities are popular on iPhone because they can provide real-time information about important events, such as the location of your food delivery, the status of your rideshare, or the score of a soccer game.

These are now available on Apple Watch with watchOS 11. They appear at the top of the Smart Stack above your other cards.

Speaking of Smart Stack, Apple has added a ton of new cards that display dynamically based on location, time, and other factors.

It tells you when rain is coming, offers translation functions when you travel to another country, or Shazam when it recognizes music.

New apps for the Apple Watch

This year there are two new apps for the Apple Watch – Vitals and Translate.

The translation app appears in the Smart Stack

Translator app comes to Apple Watch

The latter comes from the iPhone and offers translation capabilities for 20 different languages. It listens to you and speaks responses, with the user being able to control the speed.

Vitals is completely new and gives us (finally) a visual way to see whether many of the metrics captured by the Apple Watch are in line with your normal state.

If you wear your Apple Watch at night, Vitals summarizes your heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, SpO2 levels, and sleep in the morning.

You will get a small graph with all these values and a warning if any of them are out of range, along with suggestions for possible reasons for the irregularities.

Training and fitness

As far as fitness is concerned, Apple has decided that you can now pause your series after ten releases.

It's easy to be at our best at WWDC, but when we're not in the field, we do everything we can to stay at our best, even pushing ourselves when we're sick or in the hospital.

Pause streaks with watchOS 11 on iPhone and Apple Watch

You are now allowed to have rest days

We also lost a streak for silly reasons like an extra-long Apple Watch upgrade that cut a nearly 1,500-day run short. Now you can pause for any period of time, including rest days.

In watchOS 11, you can also set different goals depending on the day. For example, you can reduce your calorie intake during the week, but increase your targets on the weekend.

Training load finally comes to the Apple Watch

New is the training load, which compares your current performance with data from the last 28 days. It shows whether you are above, below or on track to your existing threshold.

The training effort is displayed after training with several options

After your workout, a new effort screen will appear. For most cardio workouts, an effort will be automatically selected based on your estimated power, but you can also adjust it manually.

Finally, Check In is integrated directly into Workout so you can start and end your workout without an extra step required on your iPhone.

Dials

To our disappointment, there are no new watch faces for watchOS 11. This may be temporary, but we will surely see it in the fall.

However, Apple has redesigned the Photos interface. It now uses machine learning to analyze the photos in your library, find optimal photos, and suggest image compositions.

With watchOS 11, faces look even better in photos

Users still have control over language, color, size, font and placement, or you can leave most of it to the watch.

Availability and supported devices

You can expect a public release this September, alongside Apple's other operating systems.
