Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: All the rumors so far

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is launching this summer, and Samsung clearly wants to get more people excited about foldable phones as the company tries to bring such devices more into the mainstream.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was a welcome improvement over its predecessor thanks to a larger cover display, improved cameras, and a slimmer no-gap design. However, battery life wasn't great and it faced stiff competition from the Motorola Razr+.

The rumors about Samsung's new foldable device are simmering. Early rumors point to an even larger screen, a more robust foldable display and a much more powerful main camera. Samsung will have to make a huge leap if it wants to reclaim the crown.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Price and release date

We expected the Galaxy Z Flip 6 to be priced similarly to the $999/£1,049 starting price of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, especially since offering a foldable device for under $1,000 was a strong selling point for Samsung. This is even more true given that this price is in line with the Motorola Razr+.

However, a rumor from OnLeaks says that the Galaxy Z 6 Flip will be $100 more expensive than the Galaxy Z Flip 5. That would mean a starting price of $1,099 for the entry-level 256GB model, while the 512GB version would cost $1,219.

We have a better idea of a possible release date for the Galaxy Flip 6. The last three Galaxy Flips were released in August, so it's reasonable to assume the same will be true for both the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung's expected foldable updates this year.

However, it is believed that the launch day could be a little earlier this year. Rumors suggest that Galaxy Unpacked Summer 2024 could take place on July 10, which is a little earlier than last year. Since Samsung is sponsoring the 2024 Olympics, which start in late July, it would be a smart move to show off a new device during the games.

The release date is still unclear, but if previous releases are anything to go by, it could come out two weeks later – around July 24th.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Design

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 should be similar to the previous model, although a uncovered patent application filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) by Samsung Display and registered the term “Ironflex” as a trademark. This could mean that something new is coming to the design.

While it's unclear what Ironflex really is, we suspect it's a more robust foldable screen. One area we've heard Samsung is looking into is dust resistance. Last July, Roh, Samsung's head of mobile devices, said foldable fans would have to “wait a bit longer” but that plans were underway.

A leak from a well-known source, SmartPrix, has shown several high-resolution renders of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, as well as a 360-degree video. While the phone appears to be very similar to the previous model, it is thicker, which could indicate a larger battery. However, it is still questionable whether the cover screen will be larger. A recently leaked promotional image shows it next to the Z Fold 6, but it is difficult to say whether the cover screen is larger.

According to one source, Samsung could offer the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in light green, light blue, silver, and yellow. These colors were subsequently confirmed by leaker Evan Blass, who adds that white, black, and peach will be available as exclusive options if you buy your phone from Samsung.

Another post on X has revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could feature the same Corning Gorilla Armor as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This would give the device better protection against scratches and glare than many of its contemporaries. The leak also mentions a better cooling system and the possibility of models with 12GB of RAM.

One of the big features of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 was the newly enlarged cover display, with the screen size increasing from 1.9 inches on previous Flips to 3.4 inches. Current reports makes it sound like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could take this feature a step further.

According to display analyst Ross YoungSamsung could be aiming to increase the overall size of the external screen for the Galaxy Flip. This will apparently have a 3.9-inch external display, which is quite large compared to other foldable flip devices. The Z Flip 5 had a 3.4-inch cover screen, while the Razr+ offers 3.6 inches.

According to a rumor about the Galaxy Z Flip 6, there is a possibility that the cover display will be upgraded from 60Hz on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to 120Hz refresh rate. However, this is said to be in development, so it is possible that we won't see this feature after all if Samsung can't get it ready in time.

The interior display will likely have the same 6.7-inch diagonal when opened, but Samsung is said to be using a thicker version of its ultra-thin display glass. The result of this move would be a harder surface and a smaller crease above the interior display.

One Galaxy Z Flip 6 camera leak says that Samsung could be working on a prototype of the Flip 6, codenamed B6, and will have a 50MP main camera sensor. This would be a big jump up from the 12MP sensor of the current Galaxy Z Flip 5. In April 2023, a Twitter leaker reported @Tech_Reve explained how the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 could see significant changes.

The best evidence yet of a camera upgrade on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes from regulatory filings related to the new phone. These documents point to a 50MP main camera for the Flip, as previous rumors had predicted.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Performance

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 will likely feature the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip as the Galaxy S24 lineup, although it may switch to the Exynos 2400 chip in some markets. That's the strategy Samsung has followed with its Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus models, after all.

However, subsequent reports claim that Samsung will exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the Galaxy Z Flip 6. This should not only mean a performance boost but also longer battery life, as we have seen a significant improvement in endurance on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 Ultra models with Snapdragon silicon.

A 12GB RAM option may also be available, but that could be limited to certain regions. Otherwise, expect the same 8GB RAM with 256GB or 512GB storage as the Z Flip 5.

A leak posted on X says the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could have a 4,000mAh battery, which would significantly improve the phone's performance. However, regulatory documents from the FCC say the phone will only have a 3,790mAh battery. The Z Flip 5 had a 3,700mAh battery, and it looks like we can only expect a slight increase this year.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Outlook

If the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is on the cards for an early July launch, we're in the home stretch of rumor season for this phone. What we've heard so far sounds promising, especially when it comes to camera upgrades and a larger external display. We'd like to see Samsung add a stronger zoom as well as exclusive Galaxy AI foldable features in addition to what's available on the S24 series.
