TikTok fixes security flaw that compromised CNN and other well-known accounts

0

Summary

  • TikTok has now patched a vulnerability in its app that allowed attackers to gain control of accounts.
  • It is unclear how this was accomplished, but the attackers appeared to focus on prominent accounts.
  • The compromised accounts included CNN, along with a “very limited” number of other accounts.

TikTok is a true phenomenon in the US. The app has created many trends in the past few years and has even managed to revive songs and breathe new life into a once-dead music catalog. Of course, there is also the dark side of the app, which tends to be addictive, as the app's algorithm constantly delivers just the right amount of dopamine hits to keep you hooked and watching for hours.

Not to mention that the US has been trying to ban the app for a few years now. And if things go wrong, the company could even pull TikTok out of the US altogether. Of course, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but for now, the brand seems to be in trouble as some high-profile accounts were hacked, prompting TikTok to close a security loophole that allowed attackers access.

Problems for some, but you are most likely safe

The news was first reported by Axios and as of now, we don't really know the full extent of the damage here (via Engadget). But it is certain that the CNN TikTok account was compromised and that there was also an attempt to access Paris Hilton's account. While TikTok told the BBC that a “very limited” number of accounts were compromised, it's still unclear what that actually means and how widespread this issue is at this point.

Furthermore, it is unclear how this problem actually started. Some data suggests that it first appeared when a message was clicked, and other sources state that it was a zero-click attack. Regardless of the method, one thing is certain: this is a quick reminder to always be vigilant when using any apps or programs on your smartphone, tablet, or computer, as nefarious things could be lurking in the background.

If you're a little worried about your account right now, you probably won't be a target. This attack apparently targeted high-profile accounts like the ones that were compromised. TikTok is now working with the affected accounts to restore service. Once things are under control, there's a good chance there will be more information on this issue. However, this is a good reminder that apps and accounts can be compromised, so always take the proper precautions and stay safe.
