Tornado and flood rescue videos and storm reports from across Maryland on June 5

0

Thursday, June 6, 2024

A wave of tornadoes broke out across central Maryland Wednesday afternoon and evening. This is the largest wave of tornadoes in a single day in Maryland since nine tornadoes were reported on June 1, 2012. A warm front was moving through the region and the threat of severe storms was minimal at a level 1 out of 5, but conditions proved otherwise.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, there were 23 reports of tornadoes across the United States on Wednesday, June 5. Broken down by region:

  • Maryland = 16 reports
  • West Virginia = 4 reports
  • Virginia = 1 report

In addition to the tracks of these tornadoes, widespread flooding occurred in Harford County, requiring water rescue.

A list of tornado reports can be found at the end of this post.

Precipitation: Doppler radar estimate

Between 4 and 7 inches of rain fell across Harford County, MD. Rainfall peaked along Route 7 Philadelphia Road and the bay at Abingdon and Aberdeen. This is a very low-lying area adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay with obstructed drainage, which worsened the flooding. See FLOOD RESCUE VIDEO and photos below.

Tornado confirmation

There are numerous photos, videos and reports. Today and possibly in the next few days, the National Weather Service will be conducting on-site surveys to confirm the landings and the intensity of the impacts.

There was significant damage and some injuries. I want to wait to report until there is full confirmation, but you can see the notes in the report table below.

My message about dyslexia again

I realize there are some spelling and grammatical errors and the occasional other mishap. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer errors I might miss. I've made a few public statements over the years, but if you're new here, you may have missed it: I'm dyslexic and found out in my sophomore year at Cornell University. It didn't stop me from getting my degree in meteorology and being the first to receive the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington area.

One of my professors told me I'd made it this far without knowing it and I shouldn't use that as a crutch for the future. That was Mark Wysocki and he was absolutely right! I overlook my mistakes when proofreading. The automatic spell checker on my computer sometimes does it wrong and makes it worse. I can also make mistakes when making predictions. No one can predict the future perfectly. All maps and information are accurate. The “wordy” stuff can prove difficult.

There was no editor to review my work while writing and have it ready to ship in a timely timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to correct typos when she has time. That might be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps prove that what you are reading is really mine… That's part of my charm. #FITF
