UNC baseball star Vance Honeycutt named Academic All-District

0

Vance Honeycutt receives the most attention for his outstanding play on the baseball field.

Honeycutt, UNC's center fielder and a surefire first-round pick in July's MLB Draft, can hit, run and catch as well as anyone. During the Chapel Hill Regional on Friday, May 31 through Monday, June 3, ESPN commentators Mike Monaco and Gaby Sanchez went so far as to call Honeycutt THE best player in the country (a true statement, in our eyes).

Earlier this year, Honeycutt became the only player in ACC baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 70 bases, and he also won ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, an honor he earned with his catch Monday night against LSU that clinched the Chapel Hill Regional Finals title.

Honeycutt heads into the Chapel Hill Super Regional, which begins at 6 p.m. Friday against West Virginia, with a .309 batting average, 62 RBIs and 24 home runs – the best in North Carolina.

We could highlight Honeycutt on the field all day long, but he's a pretty good student in the classroom as well.

On Tuesday, June 4, Honeycutt was named to the College Sports Communications Academic All-District team.

To earn a spot on the team, Honeycutt, a junior communications major, must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.50 and play in 90 percent of the Diamond Heels' games.

On Sunday, July 7 – hopefully after UNC wins the College World Series – Honeycutt will be named an All-America honoree.
