Travis Roland of the Mainland football team and Tim McRae of New Smyrna Beach weightlifting were honored as boys and girls coaches of the year, respectively, at the Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards on June 3 at Ocean Center Arena.

The show was produced with support from Halifax Health.

Other finalists for the boys coaching position were Rick Darlington of DeLand football and Mark Grose of Spruce Creek golf. Other finalists for the girls coaching position were Dina Pinson of DeLand golf and Brandon Stewart of Mainland basketball.

Roland captained Volusia County's first high school football team to win a state championship in 2003 and coached his alma mater to its second region title last December, almost 20 years to the day later. His Mainland Buccaneers capped a 14-1 season by defeating St. Augustine 21-19 in the Class 3S final. They avenged their 2022 loss in the state final with a walk-off field goal by Jacob Gettman.

For the first time in his coaching career, Roland focused his attention primarily on the offense after his previous offensive coordinator left for a college job in the offseason. The unit averaged 34.5 points per game in 2023. Mainland's defense allowed just 12.6 points per game and featured two All-Americans.

McRae, who twice competed for Team USA in the Summer Olympics, led New Smyrna Beach to a second-place finish in the Olympic and traditional standings at the FHSAA Class 2A girls weightlifting championships. The 'Cudas had three double gold medalists – senior Mopelola Tofade and juniors Asha-Mahri Manzueta and Olivia Bond-West. In addition, the New Smyrna Beach boys took second place in the Class 2A traditional with another champion pair, senior Ryan Geary and junior Isaiah McCloud.

The Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards are part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest program of its kind in the country.
