The 5 best makeup trends of summer 2024, according to experts

0

Summer is finally here and along with holidays, endless sunny days and adventurous nights, we can also expect a few new beauty trends. When the summer heat hits, our usual makeup routine gets a little changed; full coverage foundation becomes a radiant skin tone, matte lipsticks are replaced by lip oils and satin finishes and our multi-step beauty routines become more about lightness and a skin-friendly look. Best of all, summer invites you to experiment with colors, glitter and anything that catches the light in the sun.

This season, more than any other, evokes a sense of lightness and fun. “There's a noticeable tendency toward trends that evoke a specific feeling or experience,” says makeup artist Chloe Baltimore. “This shift indicates a desire for more meaningful and impactful beauty trends that resonate with people on a deeper level.” We see how colors and textures evoke memories or positive feelings, and this summer's trends are all about using those elements to capture the essence of the season. We spoke to beauty experts to provide a little more insight into some of the makeup trends to look forward to this summer.

Orange blush

Summer's bright sun and warm weather bring with them a new appreciation for bright colors. Bold orange tones evoke memories of summer sunsets and sipping Aperol Spritz by the pool, and the Spring/Summer 2024 runway shows prove that orange blush will be everywhere this season. Peach or orange tones look great on all skin tones and add a touch of glow and warmth to your makeup look, making you feel like you're vacationing on a tropical beach, no matter where you are.

Pearlescent skin

We all know summer is the season of glowing skin, but this year it's time we turned to cooler tones instead of indulging in the golden hues of seasons past. Pearlescent, iridescent shades add an ethereal, angelic veil to your makeup look, whether through your highlighter or eyeshadow. “Holographic shades are right on trend, offering versatility and a luminous sheen that creates a radiant look without causing excess oil production,” says Baltimore. “Different shades can attract and reflect light at the perfect angles for strategically placed shine and dimension.” Opt for a glittery opal eyeshadow to add a subtle sparkle to your look, or try a pearlescent liquid highlighter for a “lit-from-within” glow.

Sun-kissed blush

If you're looking to quickly switch up your makeup look, you probably just need to experiment with blush. From shades to intensity to placement, blush is a versatile product that can completely transform your makeup. This summer, sun-kissed blush—or doll blush, as TikTok has dubbed it—is the hottest trend of the season. “Pinks and reds on cheeks, lips, and eyes seem to be universally popular in summer, inspired by captivating trends like 'strawberry' and 'cherry girl makeup,'” says Baltimore. “These dynamic color choices not only evoke the spirited essence of summer, but also reflect the natural radiance we embody in the warmer months—effortlessly glowy and full of vitality.”

The look is brought to life by creating a gradient of color from the under-eye area that intensifies towards the cheeks. To achieve this look, add some liquid blush to the under-eye area, similar to how you would concealer, and blend it completely. Then add more blush to the high point of your cheeks and continue to blend to complete the gradient look. This will give you a pink hue in the center of your face for the perfect sun-kissed finish.

Glitter Bomb

Glitter lips are a must to continue the glowing summer vibes we know and love this season. A glitter gloss will add that extra something to your summer makeup and is the perfect finishing touch to any look. If you want to take it a step further, dab a glitter highlighter on your cupid's bow and the center of your lips and apply a gloss on top!

See green

As we predicted earlier this year, 2024 is bringing a resurgence of maximalism to the beauty industry. Green eyeshadows are all over TikTok feeds as a bold and fun addition to makeup looks. Known as the color of renewal and growth, it's understandable that everyone is seeing green this summer. Bold colors ignite a playfulness and excitement that will only amplify the new season.
