Madeline Soto's alleged murderer casually reports her missing in a video

As new disturbing bodycam footage shows, the suspected killer of Florida teenager Madeline Soto stood calmly next to her mother when she reported the girl missing.

Stephan Michael Sterns, 37, is said to have already murdered Madeline and disposed of her body in a forest when the family spoke to police on the evening of February 26.

Sterns, who was with Madeline's mother, Jenn Soto, at the time, stands quietly with his arms crossed as the worried mother explains that Madeline was dropped off near school that morning but never showed up for class.

When the officer asked what Madeline was wearing, Sterns spoke up and said the middle school student was wearing a “green hoodie, white Crocs, and either blue or black pants.”

“She just celebrated her 13th birthday,” he added.

The morning she was last seen, Madeline asked to be dropped off a few blocks from school because she was embarrassed by Stern's car, Jenn Soto was heard telling the officer.

“She didn't want to be dropped off at school. She wanted to be dropped off half a block away so she could walk,” said the worried mother.

“She didn't explain it, she's going through a phase,” Sterns added.

“I thought she was looking for headphones before she moved on, but she had just walked in that direction looking the same as any other morning,” he claimed of the last time he saw the teenager.

Police eventually reviewed local surveillance camera footage and confirmed that Madeline never made it to class at Hunter's Creek Middle School.

Just two days after his first interview with police, Sterns was arrested on charges of sexual assault and possession of child sexual abuse material.

Sterns, who pleaded not guilty in the case, was already a person of interest in the case when Madeline's body was found in a wooded area in Osceola County on March 1.

She was still wearing clothes similar to what she was last seen in, authorities said.

After the discovery of the young girl's remains, police announced that surveillance footage from the morning of February 26 showed Sterns allegedly driving around with her body in his car.

He was also seen throwing items into a nearby trash can, where police later found Madeline's backpack and school laptop, they added.

An affidavit released in early March states that Sterns likely began sexually abusing Madeline in 2022 – when she was only 11 years old.

Sterns was charged with first-degree murder in April and is scheduled to be tried in July.

It is unclear whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty in this case.
