Former UFC flyweight Geane Herrera died in a motorcycle accident in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, according to multiple reports. He was 33 years old.

The accident occurred at about 10:45 p.m. when Herrera crashed into the back of another vehicle at a “very high rate of speed” near the Gandy Bridge, the Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles told TMZ.

The MMA fighter then crashed into a concrete barrier and was thrown from the motorcycle, the outlet reported.

Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene.

Herrera, who was about to turn 34, made his UFC debut on August 25, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 73 against Ray Borg.

He lost the fight via unanimous decision, but three months later defeated Joby Sanchez by TKO.

Herrera lost his last two fights in the UFC before moving to Absolute Championship Berkut in 2018.

He made his Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship debut in 2021, defeating Abdiel Velazquez by TKO.

The family has set up a GoFundMe and tributes to the late MMA fighter have been posted on social media.

“Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Geane Carlos Herrera, known in the world of professional martial arts as 'La Pulga', whose life ended far too soon at just 33 years old. Geane leaves behind a 16-year-old son, his three-months-pregnant girlfriend, his mother, father, sisters, a brother and a family who loves him and will miss him deeply,” the family wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“Geane was full of life and always tried to live life to the fullest. He was a dedicated athlete with big dreams to make a difference and leave his mark on this world. He was such a joyful person who left a mark on everyone who came into his life.”

According to the BBC, Borg paid tribute to Herrera in a post on Instagram.

“He was a good guy, my prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time,” Borg wrote.
