Leon Edwards Welcomes Historic Title Fight With Conor McGregor at UFC 309 in MSG: “100%, That’s The Fight”

While reigning heavyweight champion Jon Jones has leaked that he is likely to return for the promotion's comeback at Madison Square Garden at UFC 309 in November, undisputed welterweight king Leon Edwards is poised to take over the main card in a historic showdown with former twosome – Division Best, Conor McGregor.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight gold medalist, is expected to return at UFC 304 in late July and headline the organization's return to Manchester in a rematch against rising contender Belal Muhammad.

As for McGregor, the former undisputed featherweight and lightweight titleholder will return after a nearly three-year hiatus at UFC 303 late next month during International Fight Week to face Michael Chandler in a bid to return to welterweight.

And ahead of UFC 304, Edwards suggested that should he topple Muhammad and McGregor beat Chandler, the pair would not appear at Madison Square Garden in New York – giving the Dubliner the chance to become a three-weight for the first time ever -Become a champion in the promotion.

“That would be good, that would be good, you know,” Leon Edwards told MMA Fighting about a fight with Conor McGregor. “It would be good to give him the chance – yes, 100 percent, why not? I feel like we should give him the chance to become one [a] triple world champion, [and] Give me a chance to take out a guy like Conor (McGregor). You know, New York – that would be perfect.”

“That is The Fight, you know,” Leon Edwards explained. “He goes out there and takes out Michael (Chandler), I take out 'No One Remembers His Name' and then we go from there. “We're going to New York – MSG, let's go. That's the fight. This is the fight, this is the fight, this is what I feel. You know, two of us have business to take care of. This is the fight that needs to happen. It should happen.”
