Maryland is “first” in nation to heed Biden’s call to “end gun violence.”

Maryland's Democratic governor has launched a gun violence prevention center essentially in honor of President Joe Biden.

Maryland became the first state in the country to officially answer President Biden's call” Gov. Wes Moore told reporters last week, according to Fox News.

The new office, called the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention, will be located within the Maryland Department of Health and will work to “consolidate and better coordinate Maryland's public health approach to gun violence prevention,” a news release said.

“The Center will work with local governments, advocates and health professionals involved in violence intervention programs to build on the critical gun violence intervention programs developed in Maryland and to ensure they are appropriately funded and based on the best available data .” The press release continues.

Why did Moore Biden credit the center? Because it was Biden who founded the Federal Office for Gun Violence Prevention in September 2023. And thanks to Moore, his state is now the first to adopt a similar statewide office.

This new office comes after a year and a half of Operation Respond, an initiative in Baltimore that aims to “provide services to those most at risk of gun violence in the community,” according to The Trace.

“A team of resource navigators, social workers, case managers and other frontline staff provides cognitive behavioral therapy, mentoring and more – with the goal of reducing gun violence,” The Trace notes.

The weapons news provider notes that Operation Respond is one of several weapons programs that would likely benefit from the creation of the new office.

“I hope that this new office will be receptive to the voices on the ground so that they can invest in the real causes, the real issues, and the communities and people who have been exposed to gun violence,” Operation Respond staff member Dante told Johnson the Newspaper.

Johnson also said he hopes the new office will provide sustainable funding and resources for his project.

“We are already looking at how we will continue funding after three years,” he said, adding that the operation is currently funded by a three-year grant from the federal government.

But while he is personally enthusiastic about the new office, many others are not. Especially gun owners who fear that the new office will target law-abiding gun owners and not criminals.

Note the latter tweets about simply prosecuting criminals. Maryland is home to Baltimore, where some of the country's mildest prosecutors work, including disgraced former Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby. Before her term ended last year, criminals were released everywhere.

Take the case of Deonte Walker, who was ultimately convicted of murdering Justin Antonio Johnson in January 2020.

“Less than three years before the murder, Mr. Walker was charged with at least 10 counts and possibly more,” according to the Maryland Public Policy Institute. “Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby made him a deal in exchange for a guilty plea to two counts: robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.”

“Although Mr. Walker faced a maximum sentence of 15 years on each count, he received only two years and was released months before he murdered Johnson. He was found guilty of second-degree murder and firearms offenses in December 2021 and sentenced to 50 years in prison,” the institute notes.
