Kyle Larson is stuck in the Indy 500 and is still planning on the NASCAR All-Star race in North Wilkesboro

Kyle Larson's biggest concern heading into Sunday's Indianapolis 500 is whether he'll get to North Wilkesboro on time.

NASCAR's youngest champion officially secured one of 12 spots in racing's biggest spectacle after setting the sixth-fastest time out of 34 drivers in Saturday's Indy 500 qualifying in Indianapolis.

Larson, the 31-year-old Mooresville resident, will race the Fast 12 in Indianapolis on Sunday from 3:05 to 4:05 p.m. If Larson qualifies well enough for the Fast Six, his chances of flying to North Wilkesboro for the Cup Series All-Star Race on Sunday night diminish.

The Fast Six, which will determine the prestigious Indy 500 pole winner, is scheduled to take place between 5:25 and 5:55 p.m. The green flag for NASCAR's All-Star Race is currently set for 8 p.m

“Stay up to date on what’s happening in North Wilkesboro,” Larson said Saturday. “It was fun to watch from afar.”

NASCAR heat races were canceled after torrential rain and lightning

It poured on Saturday in North Wilkesboro.

Parts of the track were under water when a severe thunderstorm reached the area after the first stage of the Truck Series race. Most of the circuit lost power due to intermittent lightning and rain.

The heat races originally scheduled for Saturday evening were canceled. The starting lineups for the All-Star Race will be determined in the rule book and published on Sunday morning.

The Craftsman Truck Series race almost reached the end of the first stage before the red flag was finally shown. The sequel will take place on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

New parking information

Up to 40 percent of parking spaces in North Wilkesboro are currently unusable, the racetrack said.

About 10 cm of rain fell in two hours on Saturday. On-site parking will now open at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, with entry gates scheduled to open at 10:30 a.m

Fans with “Lot 1” parking passes should go directly to Wilkes County Community College – 1306 South Collegiate Drive in Wilkesboro – starting at 9 a.m. for a free shuttle to and from the Speedway

The Speedway encourages fans to carpool to the Speedway and respect the delayed opening of parking lots to allow for additional drying time. Fans are also asked to be aware that they may be redirected to a different lot or area than the one they originally purchased in advance.

Harvick drives Larson's car in North Wilkesboro

It's been 11 years since Kevin Harvick first got into a new race car.

The recently retired NASCAR legend has raced new vehicles before, particularly since spending more time in the Hendrick Motorsports workshop before meeting Kyle Larson in practice and qualifying ahead of this weekend's All-Star Race in North Wilkesboro represented.

Harvick, who spent the last ten seasons of his career with Stewart-Haas Racing, has relished the opportunity. While Larson, the current Cup Series points leader, tried to qualify for the Indianapolis 500, Harvick took advantage of the opportunity to compete for another of the sport's most storied teams.

“I heard from the owner twice in two weeks,” Harvick told reporters with a laugh. “So this is something different.”

Hendrick Motorsports has more “structure” than Stewart-Haas

Harvick, now 48, moved from Richard Childress Racing to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014.

“It’s interesting just seeing the race shop and the structure and the way everyone does things differently,” Harvick said.

“What strikes me about Hendrick Motorsports in general is that it is really run like a business that is part of an actual structure that dictates how things are done and who you talk to. The depth of the business side and the racing side is profound, and I think that’s pretty eye-opening.”
