To the NFL draft

Dear Mr. White,: New York City, a Monday in April, circa 1992: At lunchtime, I strolled to a hotel near Grand Central Station and stood on the ballroom balcony with maybe 200 other people. The NFL draft was taking place downstairs. Over time, the NFL wised up and moved to Radio City Music Hall on weekends to hold its annual draft before prime time, and now there are 750,000 decked out fans in Detroit.

I wonder what's next. I'm thinking of a nightly show, “Any Portal in a Storm,” with host Hannah Storm, sponsored by DraftKings, where the audience can place bets on whether the Alabama five-star WR, whose productivity is furious, will be out of 83 receptions is down to 81. Either fly to Oklahoma or stay in Tuscaloosa, where his girlfriend is a star volleyball player and her total annual earnings are $3,500,000. Where's the money line, Hannah?

On the realignment of college football

To Brian: If I were king, here's how I would realign the 133 schools that played FBS football in 2023, going the other way: Eleven conferences of 12 each is 132. Notre Dame wants to be independent, and that's what they're staying . Twelve schools from other conferences would form a new Eastern Conference (bringing an old band back together, so to speak): Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, UCF, Virginia Tech, West Virginia. The four that would fill the ACC would be Maryland, South Carolina, SMU, USF. Missouri would return to the Big 12. Four more schools are switching to make up for smaller conferences. The Pac-12, MAC and Mountain West remain unchanged.

Dennis Singleton, Dayton

To Dennis: Why does each king allow Notre Dame to get what he wants while others can be moved at will?

To Caitlin Clark

To the editor: I would like to see Caitlin Clark and Larry Bird compete in a televised horse shooting competition to win $1 million in sponsored prize money and donate the proceeds to the charity of their choice. The television ratings would surpass the tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobbie Riggs and would be target television. PT Barnum would have his mouth watering at such an event.

Michael Oser, Columbus

To Michael: It's an insult to Clark to associate her with a 67-year-old man, don't you think? Why not Clark versus Curry? It also reminds me that a few years ago Pete Rose said he would only hit about .250 against today's pitchers, “but only because I'm 80 years old.”
