Desert Edge football coaches Marcus and Mark Carter are resigning

0

Marcus and Mark Carter, who led Goodyear Desert Edge to the 5A football final last season, announced their retirements on social media platforms Tuesday.

On Monday, the Arizona Interscholastic Association Board of Directors placed the school's football program and boys' track and field on probation for the 2024-25 school year because the school reported a recruiting violation to the AIA.

Mark Carter was also the head boys' track and field coach and most of his athletes were football players.

Last week, Desert Edge suspended Mark Carter for the 2024 football season but retained him as head football coach to address the recruiting violation ahead of Monday's AIA board meeting.

The Agua Fria District issued a statement last week saying Marcus Carter would remain head coach next season.

But the brothers were inseparable throughout their coaching careers.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mark Carter announced his resignation on X and Facebook:

@SpiceBoy408) and I have effectively resigned as head football coach and head boys track and field coach at Desert Edge High School. This applies immediately. We would like to thank the Agua Fria Union High School District for the opportunity to impact student-athletes through extracurricular activities. We are proud of all the great things we have achieved. In four years, 52 players have had the opportunity to advance to the next level, and 19 of those 52 were Division 1 players. Not to be forgotten are the countless great future fathers, husbands, doctors, lawyers and generational breakers. We are grateful for the memories created. To our coaches…thank you for your blood, sweat and tears. Because you guys, we are where we are today. Multiple region championships, quarterfinals, semifinals, championships and an open playoff appearance. Well done. We love our players and coaches, there is no doubt about that. In our final show of love, we made the ultimate sacrifice to hopefully give them the opportunity to play a full season. We are doing everything we can to ensure this happens.”

They were named the Arizona Republic Coaches of the Year at the end of last season. They were also named high school football coaches of the year by the Arizona Cardinals.
