WATCH: The incredible racist Asiana crash hoax that fooled a local TV host

There is a key scene in the film Moderator where Ron Burgundy, the film's eponymous journalist, reads an insult from the teleprompter to the entire city of San Diego without even realizing what he's saying. “Good job, everyone,” he says cheerfully as the studio panics. “Spicy show.” (Watch the uncensored version below)

It's hard to imagine this happening in real life, but it's also hard to believe this on-air flop in Oakland, Calif. Fox affiliate KTVU-TV: On Friday, news anchor Tori Campbell reported that the station just obtained the names of the four pilots of Asiana Flight 214, the Korean airliner that crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6, killing three people. After a commercial break, Campbell said the station had made a mistake and said the names were incorrect, but that they would be confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB acknowledged its part, saying a summer intern had “falsely endorsed” some “inaccurate and offensive names” and had acted “outside his jurisdiction.” Without naming the intern or revealing his fate, the NTSB added: “Appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that such a serious error does not occur again.”

Was this just a bureaucratic mistake by the government? Incomplete. Both in the press release and in a subsequent statement on San Francisco ChronicleAccording to Jeff Elder, the NTSB emphasized that the names came from the “media company” – presumably KTVU. The unfortunate intern, said NTSB spokeswoman Kelly Nantel timelineHe said he “acted in good faith and tried to be helpful” by confirming the unknown names. The NTSB “as a policy does not release or confirm the names of crew members or individuals involved in transportation accidents to the media,” Nantel added.

KTVU apologized for the second time on air Friday night, explaining that “we made several mistakes,” including that “we never read the names out loud and only sounded them out phonetically.” But it's hard to see how that could be true. In the video below, KTVU says it made a mistake by not asking for the NTSB official's name and position before launching into the confirmation, which strongly suggests that the confirmation was made over the phone – and means that someone at the station read the names out loud to the NTSB intern.
