A strong storm system continues to move through northern Florida Thursday morning.

The threat also extends to the Florida peninsula, and a tornado warning is in effect for much of the state until 3 p.m

After dropping up to 9 inches of rain, the storm left behind flooded roads and downed trees in Leon County. “Multiple water rescues” were also reported in the area overnight.

Meteorologists warned in advance that the storms had the potential to bring tornadoes, hail and damaging winds if they moved across the state ahead of a cold front.

A wind warning is in effect until Thursday at 8 p.m. Expect southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts of 35 to 45 mph across portions of North and Northeast Florida.

11:44 a.m.: A tornado warning for St. Johns County has been extended until noon. Areas include St. Augustine, Vilano Beach and South Ponte Vedra Beach.

At 11:41 a.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado occurred near World Golf Village, or 11 miles east of Green Cove Springs, moving northeast at 45 miles per hour. Radar shows rotation with the storm.

11:33 a.m.: A tornado warning is in effect until 11:45 a.m. for Clay and St. Johns counties

10:44 a.m.: According to the National Weather Service Jacksonville, thunderstorms will continue to move southeast across northeast Florida.

A line of showers and storms extends from the Georgia coast to Gainesville. It is moving east at 20 miles per hour. Wind gusts of up to 50-70 miles per hour are possible, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

As the storms moved across the Panhandle and Leon County yesterday and overnight, they left behind downed trees and flooded roads.

7:48 a.m.: A tornado warning is in effect until 8 a.m. for Live Oak, Houston and Wellborn.

Radar indicated a tornado. Pea-sized hail is possible.

7:33 a.m.: According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a tornado warning is in effect for much of Florida until 3 p.m.

The tornado watch covers Volusia and Flagler counties on the East Coast.

Possible threats include: a few tornadoes, isolated hail up to the size of a quarter, isolated wind gusts up to 70 mph.

7:21 a.m.: A line of squalls continues to move through southeast Georgia and has reached northeast Florida. The risk of severe storms will shift from west to east throughout the day, with heavy rain and flooding possible. Wind speeds outside of thunderstorms are estimated at 35 to 45 mph. Thunderstorm gusts could reach speeds of 50 to 70 miles per hour. According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, some tornadoes are possible.
