Is it safe to drive during the solar eclipse?

Yes, it is safe to ride, but AAA reminds drivers that there may be increased traffic on the road before, during and after the event, so people should exercise caution.

Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, told the Detroit Free Press that drivers generally don't think about driving during a solar eclipse.

“Because they occur so rarely, we don’t often think about how a solar eclipse might affect driving conditions because of the unique challenges it presents to highway safety,” said Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. “As the eclipse spreads and visibility decreases, drivers and pedestrians should exercise extra caution, patience and vigilance to ensure everyone gets home safely.”

How to drive during the solar eclipse

According to AAA.com, here's what you should do when driving during the eclipse:

  • Keep your vehicle's headlights on.
  • Fold down the sun visor to block the view of the sun.
  • Do not wear solar eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Do not attempt to photograph or film the eclipse while driving.
  • Do not pull over to the side of the road, freeway or freeway to view the eclipse.
  • Get off the road and park in a safe location away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Watch out for pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky!

When does the solar eclipse begin?
