The Pirates took a 3-0 lead last week after eliminating Miyamura High School (1-9), a team they narrowly beat last year, by a score of 110. The team had 22 shots, 10 hits and 10 RBIs in those 11 points -0 against the Patriots. Estevan Barela was the game's winning pitcher.

Barela went four innings, allowing zero runs, one hit and striking out nine batters along with two RBIs.

“It’s good to bring these wins to the district,” GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee said. “I feel like we haven’t played our best ball yet, but we’re definitely on the right track.”

In the following doubleheader against Kirtland Central, even more of the Pirates' talent shined as they defeated the Broncos in two games, 9-2 and 22-1.

In that first game against KC, Isaiah Manzanares led the Pirates' attack with 3 RBIs, 2 hits, 2 runs and 4 at bats. Niko Young pitched 5 innings, recording 2 hits, 1 run and 3 strikeouts. Dominick Gonzales threw 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run and 7 strikeouts in 2 innings. Isaiah Manzanares had another big game with 7 RBIs, 4 hits, 2 runs and 4 at bats. Ethan Taylor had 4 RBIs in this game, followed by Gonzales with 3 RBIs. Manzanares pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run and 5 strikeouts. Ethan Taylor pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 4 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts.

The Pirates begin district play on Tuesday, April 2nd away against the Valencia Jaguars. “Valencia is a team that always seems to give us a good game – so we have to expect that there will be a fight to play well,” Furbee said of the game against the Jaguars. The Jaguars, for their part, are 6:10 and have lost their last three games in the most recent tournament. They lost to East Mountain 10-9 and then narrowly lost to 5-A Cibola 11-10. In their last game they lost 85 to another 5A school, the Los Lunas Tigers.
