Gloss

Lip gloss in 45 minutes

Lip gloss is an everyday beauty product you likely pick up at the store without ever thinking you could easily make it yourself!

Gloss gives your lips a moist, shiny look. Unlike lipstick, which is opaque, even coloured lip gloss is transparent. It’s often flavoured, as well. Gloss can be used alone or over lipstick – just apply it to the centre of your lower lip.

Lip gloss is made with vegetable oils, waxes, and pigments such as micas. (Never use ultramarines, which are not approved for lips).

A good gloss:

  • Rolls on smoothly
  • Is creamy but not st
  • Is transparent/shiny

The more translucent the formula, the more the micas will reflect the light and create a shimmery effect. In an opaque formula, the mica can’t reflect the light and its effect is lost.

Making gloss for yourself and your friends is simple and rewarding. It’s a two-step process: first you make a lip balm base (which can also be used as is to make excellent lip balms); then you add the vegetable oils and pigments to add smoothness and transparency to your gloss.

Steps to follow

This recipe makes 30 g. of product, or the equivalent of 6 lip balms or about ten lip glosses, but you may use just part of the mixture and store the remainder for future use. The base can be stored for several weeks in a closed container in the refrigerator or in a cool, dry place away from the light.

  1. Prepare and sterilize your equipment and workspace.
  2. Weigh the ingredients together (except for the vitamin E).
  3. Gently melt in a double boiler, stirring from time to time.
  4. Once the ingredients are melted and well blended, add the vitamin E and mix again.vit-E
  5. Pour the lip balm base into a jar, from which you will take the necessary amounts to make the gloss.
  6. Now go on to part 2 to make the lip gloss.

Making a lip gloss

For 2 tubes

Ingredients

This recipe yields 2 tubes, the minimum that can easily be made so as to minimize waste, but you can adjust the quantities to make 4 or more (maximum ten).

Steps to follow

  1. Prepare and sterilize your equipment and workspace.
  2. In the double boiler, heat and melt the necessary quantity of basic lip balm and part of the castor oil (remember: 2 g. of basic lip balm and 8 g. of castor oil will make 2 tubes). Set aside a small amount of castor oil to make the pigment suspension (see step 3)
  3. In the meantime, choose the pigments, preferably micas, because they reflect the light and can add sparkle.mica
  4. Add the desired amount of pigment to the castor oil you set aside in step 1 and blend to disperse the pigments and eliminate lumps.melange-mica
  5. Add the pigment suspension and the flavoring to the remainder of the recipe and mix until well blended.
  6. Cut about 1cm. from the end of the plastic syringe.pipette
  7. Use the plastic syringe to fill the tubes. Don’t forget to leave room for a little air to make it easier to fill the tubes (don’t push the end of the syringe too far into the opening of the tube).

Optional step: if you have not used all the lip balm base, you can save it in a jar for later use or pour it into the round or oval lip balm tubes.

And that’s all there is to it!
