How to make a funny two-tone soap?
Montreal, with its cultural diversity, its squirrels, its parks, its mountain, its stadium, its reminders of Expo 67, its smoked meat, its potholes… and its orange cones!
They slow us down, force us to make unwelcome detours, delay our bus when we’re waiting in the rain, BUT they’re a clear sign that summer has arrived!
A playful reminder to give our friends who often tell us their trip home took twice as long because of our other friends who work in construction.

- Scales accurate to 1 g. and 0.1 g.
- 3 large stainless steel bowls
- 2 900 ml measuring pitchers
- 1 large pyrex measuring cup or HDPE pot for the sodium hydroxide solution (capacity more than 500 ml)
- 1 long rectangular HDPE soap mold
- 1 small bowl for essential oil blend
- 1 immersion blender
- 2 silicone spatulas

Good to know!
- When making white soap with vegetable oils, the choice of oils is important. As far as possible, we chose oils with a very pale colour for the white paste, and we chose sea buckthorn oil for its colour in the orange paste. If you use different oils, your soap may end up being a different colour from ours.
- To get great results, it’s important to follow our instructions, especially regarding the temperature at which you mix the sodium hydroxide and the oils.
Steps to follow
- Remove the screw in the middle of the top of the HDPE mold to make room for the soap, which must almost completely fill the mold to make sure the cone is high enough. Check to make sure the other screws hold the mold firmly in place.
- Prepare and disinfect your equipment and workspace.
- Take the necessary precautions for handling sodium hydroxide safely.
- Prepare the sodium hydroxide solution: measure the water and sodium hydroxide separately; pour the sodium hydroxide into the water, contained in a Pyrex measuring cup or HDPE pot; mix together and leave to cool.
- Meanwhile, weigh the palm and coconut oils in a large stainless steel container and melt in the double boiler. Once melted, remove from heat and add the sunflower seed, grape seed, and castor oils and let cool.
- Weigh and mix all the essential oils.
- Prepare the additives for the orange paste: in a large stainless steel bowl, place the colorants (Mars orange, Naples yellow, yellow clay) and the superfatting (sea buckthorn oil, sweet almond oil). Add 50 g of the essential oil blend and mix well. Crush the colorant granules with the silicone spatula.
- Prepare the additives for the white paste: in another large stainless steel bowl, place the colorants (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, white clay) and the superfatting (sweet almond oil) for the white paste. Add the rest of the blend of essential oils, and mix well. Crush the colorant granules with the silicone spatula.
- When the sodium hydroxide and vegetable oil mixtures have both reached between 35 and 40º C, add the sodium hydroxide to the oils, mixing with the immersion blender.
- Mix the sodium hydroxide and the oils together well. Since the mixture must be divided to make the orange and white pastes, you won’t wait for trace before dividing the mixture. If you wait too long, the mixture will be too thick and it will be difficult to make smooth layers. However, it is important to make sure it is well mixed.
- Since we need three orange layers and two white layers, divide the soap as follows: pour 1,550 grams of soap into the bowl with the orange colorants and the rest into the bowl with the white colorants.
- With the immersion blender, mix the white soap paste. Using the spatula, quickly scrape the soap from the end of the blender and, without rinsing it off, mix the orange soap paste.
- Pour approximately 550 ml of orange soap into a measuring pitcher. Cover the bottom of the mold. Gently shake the mold and lightly tap the bottom of the mold on the counter to even out this bottom layer.
- Pour about 550 ml of white soap into the second measuring pitcher. Holding the spatula above the orange mixture without touching it, pour the white mixture over the spatula as you move it from one end of the mold to the other. Spread this white layer around the mold and repeat the above step to even it out.
- Repeat steps 9 and 10, then end with a final layer of orange on top of the soap, being careful to even it out. You can draw small designs on the surface of the soap.
- Cover the soap for 24 to 48 hours. At the end of that period, freeze the soap for 24 hours to make it easier to unmold.
- Remove the soap from the freezer and let stand at room temperature for one or two hours. A light film of moisture will form between the soap and the mold edges. After that, it will be easy to unmold.
- While it is still cold, slice the soap into 1-inch thicknesses.
- Cut the bars at an angle to shape them like orange cones.
- Let dry for at least 4 weeks. (It may be necessary to let them dry for longer because the recipe contains a lot of water).
Use and storage
Store in a cool, dry place. Use on your body, for all skin types.
