A purifying and mattifying DIY face lotion

Oily skin is not always easy to care for. You want to brighten up your complexion, but then it turns far too shiny. You try a new product, and your face breaks out. It’s time for a new strategy, one that will clear the board with just the right piece: Checkmatte, a special homemade face lotion for oily skin

In developing this face lotion recipe, we focused on three key criteria. First, we wanted a light cream that wouldn’t further weigh down your skin, so we opted for Olivem 1000 as our emulsifier. Second, we sought purifying ingredients—so important for oily skin!—including the vegetable oils, hydrosol, essential oils, and even the preservatives in this recipe. Finally, we made this lotion mattifying by adding cornstarch, which helps control persistent shininess. The result is a light, fluid homemade face lotion that regulates sebum production and gives you an even complexion.

Good to know!

  • Rosemary hydrosol is astringent and purifying.
  • We chose Olivem 1000 as an emulsifier because it gives the emulsion a light and fresh feel, as well as being hydrating. It cannot be replaced by another emulsifier.
  • The black cumin seed and jojoba oils were selected for their purifying action and because they regulate sebum production, which is exactly what you’re looking for in products for oily skin.
  • We added cornstarch for its absorbent properties, which helps mattify your skin. It can be replaced by any other starch.
  • True lavender essential oil is known for its purifying properties. It can be replaced by petitgrain essential oil, which shares the same qualities.
  • Elderberry extract protects this homemade lotion from bacteria and fungi, which can grow due to the aqueous phase. Its antibacterial action is also very useful for problem skin, along with its purifying properties.
  • Rosemary oleoresin is an antioxidant that protects the cream from oxidation—meaning it prevents the oils from going rancid—and likewise has purifying properties.

Steps to follow

  1. Prepare and disinfect your equipment and workspace.
  2. Weigh the aqueous phase ingredients in the first small bowl and heat on a double boiler until it reaches a temperature of 70–80 °C. Cover the bowl to prevent the hydrosol and water from evaporating.
  3. Weigh the Olivem 1000, jojoba oil and black cumin seed oil in the second bowl and heat on the second double boiler until it reaches a temperature of 70–80°C.homemade face cream
  4. Weigh the starch in a ramekin. When the Olivem 1000 has melted, add the starch to the oil phase. Mix with the spatula to disperse the starch.
  5. Weigh the cooling phase ingredients in a ramekin and set aside.
  6. With the aqueous and oil phases still at a temperature of 70–80°C, pour the oil phase over the aqueous phase. Mix using the mini-mixer. DIY face cream for oily skin
  7. Place the bowl in a cold water bath and continue to mix. If the cream becomes too thick for the mini-mixer, continue with the small spatula.
  8. When the emulsion has cooled to 45°C or below, add the cooling phase and continue to mix.homemade moisturizer for oily skin
  9. Pour the lotion into a Ziploc bag. Cut the corner of the bag; the hole must be smaller than the opening of the bottle. Place the hole in the Ziploc bag over the bottle opening and squeeze the bag to fill the bottle with lotion. Alternatively, you can scoop the lotion into the bottle with a spoon, but the Ziploc technique helps prevent mess.homemade face lotion
